You can't make it through a magazine or a newscast these days without hearing mention of some brand of social media. They're quoting people's Twitter accounts on CNN.

There's also a big rush for businesses to tap in to this flurry of activity and use the new avenues to expand their reach.

The reality, however, is that social media is not the right fit for every business. Some products or services are a better fit, and much of that has to do with the customer and user base. The trend is worth consideration, though, and some aspects to review are:

  • Your available resources: Launching a social media initiative involves more than just setting up a few accounts and waiting for fans/friends/followers to flock to you. You'll need someone managing those sites and accounts on a regular basis in order to get any return.
  • Your expectations: Social media takes time to grow. Be patient and be prepared to try a few different approaches to growing your network and converting that growth into increased revenue.
  • Part of the whole plan: While social media sites and tools are different and can be used to accomplish different objectives, a social media plan should be developed as part of an overall marketing program.
